Author Robert Jones, Jr. (formerly known as “Son of Baldwin”)

Denville Library – 8/15/2023 @ 4:00pm – 5:00pm

All are welcome and encouraged to join the Denville Library for an engaging hour online with New York Times bestselling author Robert Jones, Jr., as he discusses his debut and award-winning novel, The Prophets.

The Prophets is a story of love. Isaiah was Samuel’s, and Samuel was Isaiah’s. That was how it was from the beginning and how it was to be until the end. In the barn, they tended to the animals but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man—a fellow slave—seeks to gain favor by preaching the master’s gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. Isaiah and Samuel’s love, once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation’s harmony.

Robert Jones, Jr. fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike. As tensions build and the weight of centuries—of ancestors and future generations to come—culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets fearlessly reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.

Denville Police Trading Card Program

Thanks to the Denville Rotary Club, all Denville Police Officers, to include our Class III Special Police Officers at the schools, have been issued their very own trading cards.  The first three students from Riverview, Lakeview and Valleyview schools to collect all 40 trading cards from the officers will win prizes – a bicycle for first place, an Amazon gift card for second place, and a tour of police headquarters with Chief Perna, to include lunch, for third place.  The contest officially kicks off this Sunday at the Rotary Street Festival, so be sure to look for the officers working the event and ask them for their card.

Additional information, to include a checklist, was distributed in this week’s Friday folders for each school.  Additional checklists are also available at police headquarters.  In order to get everyone started, Officer Underwood’s trading card is available from the dispatcher at police headquarters.  Good luck everyone and we look forward to meeting all of you!
