Alstede Family Registration for Highlands Harvest CSA Club

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. The basic idea of CSA farming is a cooperative relationship between the farmer and his customers. Based on an annual commitment to one another, community members provide a pre-season payment to purchase a “share” of the season’s harvest. The member then receives a weekly box of a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruit through the growing season, harvested at the peak of ripeness and flavor. You’ve heard of the benefits of buying local – now we’re offering you a great way to enjoy fruits and vegetables grown right here in Chester and have the opportunity to make an investment in these locally grown foods, which in turn helps to keep New Jersey green!

Treat your Sweetheart to breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. in support of the Randolph Animal Pound. $10 includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and a beverage. Tickets available for pre-purchase at The Randolph Animal Pound 1345 Sussex Turnpike or you can pay at door. There will also be baked goods for sale. The event takes place at The Exchange, 160 E. Main Street, Rockaway.

Ironia Elementary School goes international. Come journey around the world at Ironia’s annual Winterfest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The snowdate is Feb. 9. Enjoy a day of family fun including carnival games, crafts, face painting, live shows, bake sale and more. Entrance fee is $12 per child between ages 4 and 15 ($40 maximum per family. Under 4 and over 15 are free).

New Gardener Registration for Denville Community Gardens is Saturday, March 8 9-noon at Gardner Field House.
Registration fee is $6.

HISTORY OF THE DENVILLE COMMUNITY GARDENS

In March 1972,seventeen hardy souls pioneered the first planting of the Denville Community Gardens. The original idea was an environmental project by Lorraine Caruso who, as a member of the Environmental Commission, had the approval of the Mayor and PRIDE, as well as the Town Council.

Bob Thompson succeeded Lorraine as Administrator, followed by Dennis Mahony and in 1981, Arline Cowell, followed by Dennis Mahony again in 1996 and now Bob Grant and Jan Frazer in 2012.

These first gardeners had to lug pails of water from the river until a couple of years later when a gasoline pump was installed. Now an electric pumping system is available with a regular watering schedule making that part of garden care less strenuous. These improvements were paid for from registration fees which keep the project self-supporting.

Until recently, extra plots were always available, but in the past two years 68 new people registered for garden space. Maybe the poor economy is causing the spur in interest or perhaps people are just more concerned with knowing exactly how their food is grown and what goes on it. Every effort is made to find room for all who want to join our community.
