Disney Legend, artist Tyrus Wong was born in Toishan, China, October 25, 1910. Seeking better opportunities, he and his father came to the U.S. to live in Los Angeles. Wong started at the Walt Disney Studios in 1938 as an entry-level in-betweener. Later, his beautiful landscapes and forest renditions helped him become a lead inspirational artist on the production of Bambi. (Wong later worked for Warner Bros. Studios, Columbia, RKO and 20th Century Fox.)
Chef Pâtissier Pierre Hermé – named the “Picasso of Patisserie” by Vogue Magazine – worked his culinary magic to create a symphony of citrus and zest that practically sings “Be Our Guest.” Taking inspiration from Mickey’s energy and enthusiasm, Chef Hermé translated those qualities into a tangy yet sweet marriage of fresh, fruity tastes.
It’s a “Mickey Zest Party”!
Chef Hermé’s personal take on the famous lemon meringue tart, with a shortbread base in the shape of Mickey’s iconic ears, a lemon filling with preserved lemon zest and pieces of fluffy lime-flavored meringue finished off with two chocolate circles of dark chocolate and strawberry puree. This practically perfect patisserie will be available at Walt’s – An American Restaurant in Disneyland Park and at California Grill in the Disneyland Hotel from November 17 through January 6.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating the birth of a rare okapi, who was born on Oct. 1 to mom Zelda. Weighing in at 54 pounds, the calf was up and mobile within the first hour of his birth. He has been nursing and bonding with his mom. The pair will remain in a backstage habitat for the next few months before joining the animals on the savanna.
The calf’s parents – mom Zelda and dad Mandazi – were chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and ensures responsible breeding of threatened and endangered species.
Disney’s Animal Keeper, Kim Thomson, expressed how excited she was to care for a new calf and how it changes the dynamics of her team’s routine.
“We will spend a lot of time conducting observations on mom and calf making sure the calf is bonding well with mom, nursing well and basically hitting all of the milestones we would expect of a growing okapi,” Kim said.
Okapis are an endangered species found in rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known as the ghosts of the forest, okapis are shy, reclusive and rarely encountered in the wild. In fact, they weren’t even discovered until 1901. There are an estimated 20,000 okapi in the world, and their population continues to decline due to poaching and habitat loss from commercial logging and mining.
Through the Disney Conservation Fund and their involvement in the AZA’s Species Survival Plan, Disney has been at the forefront of okapi conservation for many years. They have a long-standing relationship with the Okapi Conservation Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In fact, the AZA recently recognized Disney’s Animal Kingdom for its contributions to the Okapi Conservation Project.
