Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day was originally called, Decoration Day. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, to honor our fallen from the Civil War.

“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” proclaimed General John Logan.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

It is now observed in almost every state on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971, P.L. 90 – 363. This helped ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays, though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19th in Texas; April 26th in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10th in South Carolina; and June 3rd (Jefferson Davis’ birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

ARMED FORCES DAY

Armed Forces Day

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.
The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

Advisory

Boil water advisory due to water main break in Indian Lake section near Franklin Rd and Delaware.Visit www.denvillenj.org for more info

Denville Township is issuing a BOIL WATER ADVISORY due to a water main break in the area of South Shore Rd. and Delaware Tr. If you did not received a hand delivered letter at your home, similar to this alert, you do not have to boil your water. A very small number of water customers are effected. A potential or actual threat to the quality of water being provided to you currently exists; therefore, we are implementing the boil water advisory as a precaution. Boil water until you are notified that tests show you no longer need to do so.

Effective immediately and until further notice bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for dinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, mixing baby formula, juices or drinks, and preparing food until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

The following measures are also recommended: Throw away uncooked food or beverages of ice cubes made with tap water during the day of the advisory; Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking; Do not swallow water while showering or bathing; Rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle; Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water – most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms; Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries; Provide pets with drinking water that has been boiled and cooled.

If you have any questions please call the Department of Public Works at 973-625-8334. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. In case of an emergency contact the Police at 973-627-4900, ext. 9. We are working as quickly as possible to restore your water quality. Another NIXLE will be sent out when the Boil Water Advisory has been lifted. Thank you for your patience.
