#Denville – Morris Catholic joins efforts to make face shields for health care workers

Arlene Sullivan, a visual and graphic arts teacher at Morris Catholic High School (MCHS) here, has joined a grassroots effort to collaborate with New Jersey high school robotics teams and private and public sectors to use 3-D printing technology as part of an ongoing effort to ease face shield shortage in the medical field due to
the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shahram Dabri, STEM manager of the Education Office of the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, has been reaching out to more than 400 New Jersey schools to help with “PPE [Personal Protective Equipment] Made in America,” an effort with the goal of making 1,000 face shields locally using 3-D printers to make the headband portion of the device. One of those educators was Sullivan, a 15-year MCHS alumnus.

Sullivan and Dabri stayed in contact since meeting years ago at a 3-D printing workshop by MakerBot and Picatinny, where educators received a 3-D printer.

Last month, Picatinny held a two-day workshop for more than a dozen New Jersey teachers with advanced training in 3-D printing and Computer Aided Design (CAD), where they received a free MakerBot 3-D printer for their students to use in school.

After receiving Dabri’s request recently, Sullivan sought help to upgrade her home computer for the 3-D printing task from Richard Heywood, former MCHS technology expert and now technology services manager for the Somerset County Educational Services Commission and senior consultant for PeggNet Computers, and Jonathan Sullivan, her son, who is a 2017 graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark and an engineer in training.

Heywood lent her one of his updated laptops, while her son oversaw the installation. Each print takes at least two-and-a-half hours.

The 3-D programs for the medical mask pieces came from Jim Hoffman, STEM teacher at Newton High School, and the coach of its Varsity Robotics Team for the past 11 years. Rohan Sawhney, a student of
Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, asked Hoffman to help make PPEs, specifically face shields for healthcare.

Everyone involved understands the urgent need. Sullivan’s younger brother, a doctor in Sparta, and his wife both tested positive for the virus and were hospitalized.

Hoffman’s son, Justin, a Newton High School graduate and a 2017 gradate of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, now works as a third-year resident on the front lines of the crisis at University Hospital in
Newark.

“In this crisis, it’s all hands on deck and it’s great to see everyone come together in the effort,” said Hofmann, who also is requesting help from any business or school that has spare 3-D printing capacity.

Hofmann sent emails to his network of STEM partners that described the project with what materials were needed and the associated costs. The first to respond was Alex Cable, CEO of Thorlabs, Inc., a Newton-based optical equipment company.

He committed his engineering staff to prototype headband samples and then output on his company’s 3-D printers, as well as help in sourcing PETG .02 (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), a sheet of tough plastic
material that completes the face shields.

Thomas Sinner’s engineering team at Thorlabs will cut the large PETG sheets into smaller, more manageable sizes.

Happy Birthday Disney Legend Buddy Ebsen!

Many may remember fondly remember Buddy Ebsen Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies. Or for his detective work on Barnaby Jones.

Did you know he was originally casted as the Tin Man in the 1939 Wizard of Oz? Unfortunately he had an allergic reaction to the aluminum powder used in the make up and was replaced by Jack Haley.

But Buddy Ebsen has quite the Disney portfolio. So much so that he was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1993.

He appeared in such TV specials as the 1973 Walt Disney: A Golden Anniversary Salute, the 1978 NBC Salutes the 25th Anniversary of the Wonderful World of Disney, and the 2001 Walt: The Man Behind the Myth. Noted for his unusual, surreal dancing and singing style, he was chosen by Walt Disney to be filmed dancing (on many occasions) as an aid for his animators and Imagineers.

In Loving Memory of Chuck Berry

In Memory of Chuck Berry
May 21, 2008 – March 27, 2020
You were my partner, my soul mate, my hiking buddy, my walking and exploring partner. You were always at my side. Thank you for your years of love and companionship. Stepping out now without you is devastating.

Nothing will ever replace my soul mate, Chuck Berry; but the arrival of Ziggy in late April helped us remember Chuck fondly vs. a devastating loss.

Ziggy, only six months, has finally been leash trained. He was like walking a humming bird. We have started our hikes and herding skills training. I should have him as a certified goose chaser by early spring 2021. Herders like to have purpose.

#State of New Jersey #MorrisCty #Denville

Update ***US Department of Homeland Security extends enforcement deadline of Federal REAL ID Act from Oct. 2020 to Oct. 2021***

For whatever reason, the State Of NJ decided to introduce the ability to change your gender on your Driver’s License. No matter how you feel you identify, DON’T DO IT!! The State of New Jersey is suppose to come into compliance with the Federal Real ID Act by October 1, 2020.

Have a look at the Federal Requirements that are required to obtain a Real ID: https://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/real-id-act-text.pdf Changing your gender on your State License now will keep you from qualifying for the Federal Real ID. Or at least open up an administrative nightmare to navigate to obtain the Real ID.

NJ Officials are well aware of this deadline. It is beyond my comprehension why this obstacle is being introduced without making the Real ID compliance known.

What ever your thoughts or preferences are for identifying, it isn’t worth running the risk of being turned away at the airport if an emergency arises and you have to fly!

#Denville, What R U Doing Wednesday?

February 12, 2020, @RenzoGracieDenv has some open spots for anyone that wants to see what Mixed Martial Arts is all about!

My son is a proud student of @RenzoGracie. During bootcamp, the MIL sets up games for platoons within their battalion to challenge and apply their skills against each other. My son, a proud student of @RenzoGracie learned all of his one to one combat skills from there. He ended up being his platoons secret weapon and was undefeated against every single soldier sent in to challenge him during the entire duration of bootcamp.

Thank you @RenzoGracieDenv !
